3 Things to Do When You're Stuck

When you are in the middle of resistance, it can seem like you will never be productive and get stuff done. I personally have never met anyone who has never faced the “Resistance Monster” at some point in their life – so I’m willing to bet it’s something you’ve encountered yourself. I’d like to share a few ways that I have found helpful in overcoming resistance.

So, here are 3 things you can do when you realize that you are stuck.

1. Change Location

Physically get up and go somewhere else to continue your work. If you are in your home office, go to a coffee shop. If you are in a coffee shop go to your office. If you are in a co-working space, go home and work. You get the idea. The change of physical location does something like a Reset to your brain. It feels like you're starting fresh and in the time it takes to change the location, your mind can begin to prepare itself for that activity. So, by the time you resettle, you're ready to go.

2. Change Activity

Stop working on whatever it is you're working on. Set a timer for 15 or 20 minutes and move to the next activity on your list. Work on that for a bit. Or just take a break and meditate for a while, or get a snack (don't overdo this one!). After the timer goes off, go back to the task you're stuck on and see if it's not a bit easier to get going on.

3. Move Your Body

Get up and move! Jump! Dance! Take a walk! Physically get the blood flowing - re-energize those cells. This often does a lot to clear your head and get you ready to be able to re-focus your efforts.

Very often when we hit resistance there is an underlying belief or fear that is stopping us from moving forward. In my next post I'll discuss that possibility a bit.

Please let me know any ways you've come up with to deal with the Resistance Monster in the comments below.
